Just in time for summer reading, each of District 28’s three elementary schools officially opened a Little Free Library for all the community to use.

Each of District 28’s ‘libraries’ is constructed of wood and decorated by the school. The community is invited to take a book and share a book at any of the three locations: Greenbriar School, 1225 Greenbriar Lane; Meadowbrook School, 1600 Walters Ave., or Westmoor School, 2500 Cherry Lane.

Little Free Libraries are popping up around the country and around the world as a way for the community to read and exchange books and inspire a love of reading, according to Todd Bol created the first Little Free Library in Wisconsin as a tribute to his mother, according to the website. Today there are more than 4,000 libraries and a non-profit organization sponsoring the effort.

The school librarians introduced the LFLs to the elementary students before school was out and published a video explaining how they work.

“We had always loved the idea of a Little Free Library, and when I spotted a man selling them in Wisconsin, I knew it was meant to be,” said Greenbriar Librarian Colleen Sanchez.

Based on the model developed by Bol, the mini-schoolhouse boxes are mounted on a post in a public space. Readers of all ages are encouraged to share books they love and discover new books donated by another user.

A few more guidelines to help make the LFLs a success:

  • All types of family-oriented books are welcome: picture books, chapter books, magazines. If you enjoyed it with your family, it’s worth sharing.
  • Please do not leave books outside the protection of the LFL if it is full. Wait until there is room to donate a book.
  • Please don’t leave used journals, puzzle books or coloring books, and keep them free of debris.
  • Do not place public or school library books in the Little Free Library.
